Im playing Xbox Live without a Gold membership?

ok, this is completely true and I dont know how it happened, my Xbox Live 3 month card expired a couple days ago and i had been playing stuff offline, but then today I accidentally went into online on Black Ops and it was letting me play online like normal, but it clearly says in my account info that i am on "Xbox live free", does anybody know why this is?
