Should we register as a non-profit?

A year ago I started a small organization with a friend called CHANCE. We dedicated it to promote education to unprivileged children around the world. A year later, we have raised over $2000 and have helped a school in India make repairs, buy supplies, a water tanker, etc. Now we want to do bigger things, and one of the ideas that the people on our team suggest is that we should become a non-profit. We are just students in high school and are going to become juniors next year and we have raised a little more that $2000. Is it wise to become a non-profit now? One of my friend's dad has a his own large non-profit and is willing to give advice, his uncle is also a lawyer. I am just not exactly sure if it is a good idea. What do you recommend? If not to become a non-profit, what should we do from here. If yes to a non-profit, what are we getting ourselves into and how difficult will it be.
