How come I can't use the "Control" (Ctrl) key to select multiple items any longer?

I recently bought a new laptop and it has Windows 7 preloaded...I'm working on a report in Microsoft Works and I'm needing to highlight and select multiple sections and I can no longer do that using the control key as I always have in the past...does anyone know why or how I can fix this or another alternative...thank you in advance :)
